A typical day out in Denbighshire, North Wales

There are plenty of different things to do and see in Denbighshire.

From Ruthin Gaol to horse-drawn barge trips in lovely Llangollen there are many ways you can spend your day. To give an example of the kind of day you and your family can enjoy in this beautiful area of North Wales, we’ve created an example day out. Use it as inspiration for your own trip and you’ll have a great time!

I had been thinking about ideas for family days out in North Wales for some time, so I decided to stop thinking and just get out there! I chose Denbigh as the location, as it was nearby and it seemed to have plenty of things to do that us adults would enjoy as much as the kids.

I thought we’d start off the day with a visit to Denbigh Castle. The kids loved running around the ruins while we got the chance to take in the architecture and stare out over the gorgeous countryside. We even learned something – Denbigh apparently comes from the Welsh for “small fortress”!

After spending a couple hours exploring the area, I thought it would be a good time to allow the children to let their creative sides take over, so we popped down the road and walked down to the Afon Ystrad. Here I took out the sheets I had printed off the night before – an activity for the kids involving creating nature collages inspired by Beatrix Potter.

This was a great way to spend an hour or so – we all got involved and my daughter especially loved her collage of one of the Flopsy Bunnies, which used seed pods, leaves, flowers and twigs! My attempt was not quite as successful…

Once we’d finished that, we put a picnic blanket down and ate a late lunch by the river. As soon as we’d filled up and refreshed, I led the herd down to Denbigh proper, where we indulged in a bit of shopping before making a competition out of spotting the town’s market past. After that we stopped for a quick cup of tea and a cake before heading home. Even though it’s just a short drive, both the kids were fast asleep before we got home, making this a truly great day out in North Wales!
